Pregnancy and Prenatal Care Q & A
What are pregnancy and prenatal care?
Pregnancy and prenatal care involve medical evaluations and treatment that you receive over the course of your pregnancy. Receiving quality prenatal care during high- and low-risk pregnancies can improve health outcomes for you and your baby and detect medical problems before they become serious.
What happens during my pregnancy and prenatal care appointment?
When you arrive at Desert Hills Care Center for your first pregnancy and prenatal care appointment, Dr. Ballon-Hennings and his team review your medical history, check your vital signs, and complete a pelvic examination. They may have you undergo a urine test, blood tests, or vaginal ultrasound to view your uterus and the growing fetus.
Dr. Ballon-Hennings and his team answer questions you may have about your pregnancy and overall health. They let you know what to expect during pregnancy, labor, and delivery, and calculate your due date.
During subsequent prenatal appointments, the Desert Hills Care Center team weighs you, checks your vital signs, and completes a physical exam. They might measure your abdomen, listen to your baby’s heartbeat, recommend an abdominal ultrasound, complete gestational diabetes screenings, or offer genetic testing.
If Dr. Ballon-Hennings detects a health problem in you or your baby, he might recommend you undergo additional diagnostic tests or treatments to prevent complications.
How often should I schedule prenatal visits?
The number of pregnancy and prenatal care appointments you require to maintain exceptional health is based on whether your pregnancy is high or low risk. In general, many experts suggest seeing your OB/GYN during pregnancy:
- Once monthly during weeks 4-24
- Twice monthly during weeks 24-35
- Weekly during weeks 35 to birth
Dr. Ballon-Hennings may classify your pregnancy as “high risk” if you’re older than age 35, are carrying multiple fetuses, have a medical condition or pregnancy complication, or have a history of miscarriage or premature births. High-risk pregnancies may warrant additional prenatal visits.
What happens during labor and delivery?
The Desert Hills Care Center team can help you safely and comfortably deliver your baby when it’s time. They take a patient-centered approach to labor and delivery, following your birth plan as closely as possible. Dr. Ballon-Hennings follows up with you right after delivery and offers postnatal care to optimize your health and wellness.
